Mets are not confirming another start for Jonah Tong

Key Insights as Mets Look Ahead

As the Mets prepare for a pivotal conversation day following Monday’s off-day, they continue to emphasize their need for creativity within a rotation that’s currently testing seven potential starters while maintaining six on the roster.

Manager Carlos Mendoza is hesitant about letting Jonah Tong start again after his recent struggle. Tong had a tough outing on Friday, failing to complete the third inning and throwing over 40 pitches, giving up six runs and three walks in an 8-3 defeat to the Rangers at Citi Field.

“I understand,” Mendoza commented on Tong’s future starts, suggesting that top prospects may need to be considered in various pitching roles.

Initially, Tong’s performance in his first two games seemed promising, allowing just five runners over 11 innings against both the Marlins and the Reds. However, in contrast, the Rangers exhibited remarkable patience, making it difficult for him to find his rhythm. Notably, Texas batters saw 19 pitches and barely swung, which contributed to a frustrating inning for Tong.

Meanwhile, Senga made a notable debut for Syracuse, allowing just one run over eight innings, with three hits and no walks. Originally an All-Star in 2023, Senga’s return was anticipated but delayed due to a right hamstring issue. He won’t be brought back until at least September 20, barring any emergencies.

Among the current options, Nolan McLean performed well enough to secure a spot, while Brandon Sproat made a strong impression in his first outing. There seems to be some experimentation regarding pitching pairings, especially with Sean Mania and Clay Holmes, who might be used in tandem but face challenges going deep into games. David Peterson had a somewhat decent outing, yielding three runs in five innings during a recent game against Philadelphia.

Francisco Alvarez made an impact by hitting a solo home run, recording his first run of the season. Huascar Brazobán, stepping in to relieve Tong, put together an impressive 3⅓ scoreless innings, marking one of the better outings of his career.

In a game on Friday, Cedric Mullins, who had been out of the lineup, had another chance and recorded three hits. The centerfielder has struggled recently, posting a low batting average since joining the Mets from the Orioles. Adjustments are being made, especially in hitting technique, with coaches emphasizing a straightforward approach to getting to the ball.

“We talked about keeping his hands in front,” co-director Jeremy Burns said. “If your hands fall behind, reaching the ball becomes a challenge.”

In a somber moment, the Mets honored former manager Davy Johnson, who passed away recently. Bobby Valentine, Johnson’s former coach, reflected on his impact, highlighting Johnson’s analytical mindset and openness to understanding the game in depth.

Additionally, Tylor Megill is still awaiting further medical evaluations regarding his elbow tension, Mendoza noted.
