CHICAGO — Pablo Reyes' speed and versatility were two attractive traits for Mets executives as they considered adding to the roster in September.
The team designated the veteran utility man for assignment Sunday from Triple-A Syracuse University with an eye on bolstering its bench.
Reyes appeared in 21 games for the Red Sox this season before being released for designated release.

“He's been in this league before and can impact games in a variety of ways and help us win,” manager Carlos Mendoza said.
The Mets also brought back relief pitcher Alex Young, adding a left-handed pitcher to their bullpen.
Young posted a 1.29 ERA in seven games for the Mets before being traded to Syracuse in August.
With this addition, the Mets' September roster now stands at 28 players.
Mendoza noted that changes are still possible if needed.
Among the players selected to replace Reyes was Luisángel Acuña, who fits a similar profile as a versatile speed option.
Acuna, who was acquired last summer in the Max Scherzer trade with Texas, has stolen 36 bases with Syracuse but has struggled offensively with a .676 OPS.
Mendoza said he considered using Acuña but the team would rather have him playing every day at Syracuse than have him on the bench in the major leagues.
