Mets' Francisco Lindor might not be ready for Opening Day due to possible surgery.

Injury Concerns for Francisco Lindor

Even before the season kicks off, the New York Mets are facing significant injury challenges.

Star shortstop Francisco Lindor has been dealing with discomfort in his left hamate bone over the past few days. According to President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, he will see a specialist soon to assess for a potential stress reaction.

Lindor, who is 32, is set for tests on Wednesday. The outcomes will likely indicate whether surgery is necessary. If he does need surgery, the recovery time is typically around six weeks, which would extend past the opening day scheduled for March 26 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Throughout his time with the Mets and before that, Lindor has been remarkably durable. Since joining the Mets in 2021, he hasn’t landed on the injured list and has consistently played at least 152 games for the past four seasons. He signed a hefty 10-year, $341 million deal in April 2021.

Recent Seasons

Last season, Lindor participated in 160 games, batting .267 with 31 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases. He was named to the National League All-Star team and ended up 10th in the MVP voting.

On opening day, Lindor was expected to be the sole remaining player from the revamped infield. The Mets have made headlines by bringing in Bo Bichette for third base, trading for Marcus Semien to play second, and signing Jorge Polanco as first baseman.

If Lindor isn’t ready for opening day, the Mets might have to shift Bichette to shortstop or call up their top prospect, Ronnie Mauricio, to fill the role.

It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on as the season approaches.
