Mets holding out hope Dedniel Nunez can pitch again this season

CHICAGO — Dedniel Nunez's right forearm tightness was enough to land him on the disabled list, but the next day there was growing optimism that the right-hander's season might not be over yet.

The rookie relief pitcher returned to New York after finishing up a series at Arizona on Thursday.

Nunez was originally expected to undergo an MRI on his forearm, but manager Carlos Mendoza said Friday before the team's 5-1 win over the White Sox that the team was still discussing whether the procedure was necessary.

“Right now we're evaluating whether an MRI is necessary,” Mendoza said before the game. “We'll wait a few days and see how he feels and then we might have him undergo treatment.”

Mendoza said team trainers believe the ulnar collateral ligament in Nunez's forearm is not torn and is in “good condition.” Nunez will rest for a few days and then be examined.

“If all goes well, we may be able to increase production soon,” Mendoza said.

Nunez returned from the disabled list last weekend (since he missed time with forearm tightness) but experienced discomfort after his first appearance and missed the series against the Diamondbacks.

Nunez has posted a 2.31 ERA in 25 appearances this season, one of the best performances among Mets relief pitchers.

Christian Scott has started throwing from the mound (fastballs only) and is expected to add a curveball soon.

The right-hander is rehabbing a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and remains open to a return to the Mets in some capacity.

Mendoza said Senga Kodai is progressing with his rehabilitation and has started doing long throws.

The Japanese right-hander, who is recovering from a calf injury, could be a contributor if the Mets reach the postseason.

Jett Williams returned from the injured list for Double-A Binghamton after rehabbing from TFCC debridement surgery on his right wrist.

Williams was last season's team Most Valuable Player and last played in April.

The 20-year-old Williams, primarily an infielder, participated in spring training with the Mets this year.

The Mets pitchers lead the major leagues with 16 interceptions.

The total is the team's highest since 1987, when a Mets pitcher recorded 20 interceptions.

With this loss, the White Sox need to finish the season with a 12-14 record to avoid tying the 1962 Mets for the most losses in a season (120).

The White Sox were two losses away from tying the franchise's record for winless games. The 1970 White Sox finished 56-106.
