Mets’ Kodai Senga set for next rehab start

MIAMI — Kodai Senga is scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Rochester Red Wings and potentially face the Atlanta Braves next weekend.

The Japanese right-hander is scheduled to throw 80-85 pitches at Triple-A Syracuse in a rehab appearance, after which Mets officials will determine whether he’s ready to make his major league debut in 2024.

Senga has been pitching every six days and will be ready in time for Friday night’s game against the Braves at Citi Field.

“Everything is moving in the right direction,” manager Carlos Mendoza said before the Mets’ 6-4 loss to the Marlins. [Saturday] And hopefully, over the next few days, we will be able to make a decision here.”

Senga was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain early in spring training and began the season on the disabled list.

Senga put his rehabilitation on hold in May due to a triceps injury but resumed it in June.

As a rookie last season, he went 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 166 1/3 innings.

Sean Reid-Foley, who is rehabbing from a right shoulder injury, will throw some bullpen innings in Port St. Lucie during the All-Star break and then face batters in live batting practice starting Monday.

The right-hander was placed on the disabled list on June 21, further weakening an already thin relief corps.

Starling Marte began practicing with the team, his first baseball activity since being placed on the disabled list on June 25 with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Marte played catch and hit a tee shot.

No timetable has yet been set for his return, but Mendoza previously indicated the veteran outfielder would not be with the team in July.

With Marte out, the Mets are using a combination of Jeff McNeil, Tyrone Taylor and DJ Stewart in right field.

Jose Quintana reported a high fever to the trainer and was moved from his scheduled start on Sunday.

Christian Scott and David Peterson will each pitch in the Marlins’ final two games of the series a day early.

Peterson was originally scheduled to pitch in Tuesday’s Subway Series, but Mendoza is hopeful Quintana will be ready to take his spot in the rotation.

Mendoza said Quintana has been instructed to stay away from the team until he is feeling better.
