San Francisco – Mets’ Trading Plans Ahead of Deadline
The Mets are definitely still searching for ways to improve their lineup. It’s a bit surprising how many new players might come on board before the trade deadline hits this Thursday.
The current strategy seems sufficient for getting to the postseason, mirroring the previous year’s approach. But just making it isn’t the ultimate goal; they want a deep run in October.
That’s where the need for additional pieces, like another reliever and a strong outfield bat, comes into play.
With several teams hesitating to either buy or sell as the July 31 deadline approaches, the Mets are actively clarifying their situation based on weekend developments.
Team officials aim to refine their strategies and possible acquisitions by Sunday night, which could also highlight their specific objectives.
The Mets made their first move in the trade market last Friday, acquiring left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto from the Orioles in exchange for minor league pitchers Wellington Arasena and Cameron Foster.
It’s a solid market filled with quality options.
Names like David Bedner, Kyle Finnegan, Emmanuel Clas, and Felix Bautista are all potential targets for the Mets.
The outfield market, however, doesn’t look too promising. For example, Byron Buxton mentioned during the All-Star Game that he wouldn’t waive his non-trade clause with the Twins. Still, there are some viable options like Jaren Duran and Cedric Marin.
Lewis Robert Jr. has potential but has had a rough time offensively this season with the struggling White Sox, who still hold options for his contracts through 2026 and 2027.
Harrison Budder could serve as a better part-time option compared to what the Mets had from Tyrone Taylor last year.
On the starting pitching front, David Stearns, the president of baseball operations, is open to adding more talent.
Sources indicate that the Mets have done their homework on players like Sandy Alcantara and Dylan Cease.
Stearns reflects on last season’s trades, noting how players like Phil Mutton, Lynn Stanek, and Jesse Turniker helped bolster the team for a postseason run.
Francisco Lindor expressed confidence in the front office, saying, “They help us this year. Brazovan has become one of the high-leverage relievers. I trust them.”
Lindor added that he’s excited about what’s to come, suggesting it’s going to be an eventful week for the Mets organization.
Young talents like Brett Batty, Ronnie Mauricio, Mark Bientos, and Louissangel Ackna could all bring various returns in trades.
The Mets also have a strong collection of pitching prospects, including Nolan McLean, Brandon Sprout, and Jonah Ton, alongside hitters like Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford.
With Soto joining the team, the Mets filled a gap in left-handed relief that emerged following surgeries for AJ Minter and Danny Young.
Brandon Nemo stated, “We know what Stearns is doing, and Soto is a great addition to our bullpen. Hopefully the same can be said for any more changes.”
