Mets Strengthen Bullpen Ahead of Trade Deadline

The New York Mets are busy reinforcing their bullpen as the MLB trade deadline approaches on Thursday. Following their recent acquisition of Gregory Soto and a deal involving Tyler Rogers, the Mets have now secured Ryan Helsley, a closer from the St. Louis Cardinals.

While the Mets have already designated Edwin Diaz as their primary closer, it appears Helsley is seen as a potential key contributor in their postseason ambitions, with manager Carlos Mendoza eyeing a strong arm for high-pressure situations.

The Mets picked up Rogers from the San Francisco Giants just before acquiring Helsley. In recent days, GM David Stearns hasn’t hesitated to make moves to enhance the team’s bullpen. Under the terms of the deal, the Mets are sending infielder Jesus Baez (ranked No. 8 prospect), pitcher Nate Dome (No. 14), and pitcher Frank Elissart to the Cardinals.

During this season, Helsley has recorded 21 saves with a 3.00 ERA across 36 games. He had an impressive run in 2024, leading the league with 49 saves and completing 62 games for St. Louis.

In his seven seasons with the Cardinals, Helsley boasts a 2.67 ERA along with 105 saves over 299.2 innings pitched. Currently, the Mets hold the lead in the NL East with a 62-47 record, although the Philadelphia Phillies are closely trailing at 61-47.

Interestingly, the Cardinals, sitting five games back of the playoff race, were evaluating Helsley’s market before the trade deadline. It seems there were indications that he might not re-sign with St. Louis.

As the Mets aim to solidify their chances for the postseason, it’s evident that they are making strategic moves in a competitive landscape.
