WASHINGTON – AJ Minter officially hit the 15-day injury list on Sunday after he was diagnosed with LAT strain, but the extent of the injury was not immediately clear to Carlos Mendoza’s manager.
After the Mets’ 8-7 defeat to the people, Mendoza said he must consult with medical staff about his prognosis. The left-handed reliever was scheduled to take his MRI exam early that day.
Minter on Saturday cited his triceps discomfort as the reason for his departure in the eighth innings.
Needing a fresh arm, the Mets chose Joseurenha from Triple A Syracuse to win the Minter roster. Urenya, available from the bullpen on Sunday, was selected in part because he is growing and can offer multiple innings on the outing.
The Mets will take advantage of their sixth starter on Wednesday and can choose Urena for that location if they are not needed from the bullpen in advance. However, the team is leaning towards raising left-handed Brandon Waddell from Syracuse and starting or pitching behind the opener against the Diamondbacks.
Ronnie Mauricio was placed in a minor league habilitation assignment with single A St. Lucy. The infielder is rehabilitating from surgery to repair anterior cruciate ligament torn in his right knee and repairing subsequent steps to remove all the costly scar tissue from last season.
Mendoza said he chose to stick to Sterling Marte against right-handed Jackson Rutledge, rather than using second and third runners for a particular matchup and using Jesse Winker as a pinch hitter in eight innings. Marte was grounded, and the Mets didn’t score in the innings.
“It was a pretty even matchup there,” Mendoza said. “And knowing that the cutter is an effective pitch out there, I knew there was a turn signal, but I trust that I get the job done in that particular situation, and this time it didn’t happen.
After six innings on 92 pitches, Tylor Megill decided to return to seventh place.
“I told you I wanted to go back to Mendi,” Megill said, referring to Mendoza. “The bullpen is working [a lot]So I wanted to go back and give another inning and save the bullpen. ”
Megill was charged with two runs in the innings – Juan Soto lost a flyball due to a double to start the Nationals rally – he was removed with one out. It was the first time Megill worked beyond 5¹/₃ innings in the six starts of this season.
