WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Mets are one less candidate to fill Kodai Chiga’s rotation spot.
Max Kranik, who pitched two scoreless innings in the Mets’ Grapefruit League debut, was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will open the season on injured reserve, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. That’s what it means.
Mendoza said the right-hander didn’t show any signs of discomfort during Monday’s start, but felt some hamstring cramps the next day and was tested.
“It’s another blow,” Mendoza said. Coach Mendoza lost Chiga last week to a muscle strain in his left shoulder, and the Mets ace is expected to be sidelined for at least the first month of the season. “Since showing up to camp, we’ve been talking about our depth and the news about Chiga, and now Max…we think other players have a chance as well.
“We continue to like our depth and we need guys to step up and guys are going to get an opportunity.”
Kranich was included in a rotation spot for Chiga on a roster that also included Tyler Megill, Jose Butt and Joey Lucchesi.
Kranik, 26, grew up in Scranton as a Mets fan. Pennsylvania area.
The Mets claimed him off waivers from the Pirates in January.
“I think about that kid after the fight with Tommy John.” [surgery] To get back on the mound,” Mendoza said. “I was encouraged by his speed, which peaked at 96 in the two innings I saw the other day.” [mph] And he pitched very well. ”
