Mets reportedly agree to a 3-year contract with Devin Williams

Devin Williams Signs with Mets Following Tough Yankees Season

Relief pitcher Devin Williams is reportedly joining the New York Mets after a challenging season with the New York Yankees.

According to various reports, the Mets have signed Williams to a three-year, $51 million deal, which does not include opt-outs or options.

Williams, who is 31, had a notably difficult year with the Yankees. In his time in New York, he played in 67 games and had a record of 4 wins and 6 losses, along with a 4.79 ERA, accumulating 90 strikeouts and 25 walks.

He began the season as the closer but struggled, eventually losing that role. Though he managed to reclaim it briefly, he lost it again. Fortunately, he found his rhythm towards the end, finishing with a solid 2.50 ERA in the last 19 games.

Acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers before the 2025 season, his tenure with the Yankees was also marked by a significant policy change regarding team grooming standards. Williams showed up to spring training with a beard and expressed his unwillingness to shave it off, hinting that such policies would sway his decision on free agency.

After the season, despite the struggles, Williams showed interest in returning to the Yankees. He admitted, “It was tough at first, but I started to like being here… I love this city.” His connection to the team and city seemed genuine.

The Mets’ signing of Williams serves as insurance in case Edwin Diaz departs in free agency. Diaz, the team’s closer since 2019, was let go after an impressive 2025 season.

Last season, Diaz achieved a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves over 62 games and is anticipated to command a substantial contract in free agency. Should Diaz leave, the Mets can count on Williams, who has a commendable 1.83 ERA and 68 saves over six years with the Brewers. If Diaz returns, Williams could work effectively in the eighth inning, creating a strong bullpen dynamic.
