The best timeline for Ronnie Mauricio to return to the Mets is September.
Mauricio underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he suffered while playing in the Dominican Winter League last month, the team announced.
The surgery was performed by Dr. David Alchek on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
The Mets added that the typical return-to-game timeline from this procedure is eight to 12 months.
Mauricio, 22, tore his ACL on Dec. 10 in the Dominican Republic while attempting to steal second base from Lichy.
The Mets believed Mauricio could compete with Brett Batty for the starting third baseman spot in spring training.
With Mauricio out, team leaders could look to outside options like Gio Urshela or Justin Turner who can play the position at least part-time.
