Mets Make Strategic Choices in Pitching Staff

Last winter, the Mets opted not to sign high-profile starting pitchers, such as Corbin Burns, Blake Snell, and Max Fried, instead going for less risky options.

One player benefiting from this strategy is Griffin Canning, who signed a one-year deal with the Mets worth $4.25 million after a challenging season with the Angels.

Canning is set to make his twelfth start on Tuesday at Citi Field.

When asked about the organization’s decision to overlook more established names in favor of players like himself and Clay Holmes, Canning shared his thoughts.

“It just shows their confidence in their ability to nurture them,” Canning explained. “They believe they can say the right things and help us get there.”

Last season, the Mets had success stories with pitchers like Sean Manaea and Luis Severino.

Canning, who finished with a 5.19 ERA while with the Angels last season, is embracing new strategies this year. He’s been encouraged by the Mets’ pitching coach to lean on his slider and changeup, which he is following.

“I think I’ve strayed from my identity as a pitcher,” Canning admitted. “I used to pitch backwards, but trusting my slider and changeup has strengthened my game plan and given me confidence. This feels right; this is my path to success.”

Canning, who resides in Manhattan, noted that he’s not often recognized at the ballpark, but he doesn’t mind. “New York is such a big city; everyone has their own lives, and they don’t really care who’s around,” he said. “But it’s cool. I love living here and have enjoyed playing in front of the fans.”

In roster news, the Mets have promoted Justin Garza to the Major League roster and sent Brandon Waddell to Triple-A Syracuse. Garza, who joined from the Giants, last played in the majors in 2023 with the Red Sox.
