Mets stage late comeback to defeat Orioles

Baltimore — Mets Rally for Comeback Win Against Orioles

On Tuesday, the Mets put on a dramatic show reminiscent of an All-Star game, completing a comeback over the Orioles in ten innings.

Key contributions came from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, both of whom hit two-run homers in the eighth, reigniting the Mets’ momentum.

Juan Soto, who some may consider an All-Star snub thus far, delivered a go-ahead single in the tenth, leading to a 7-6 victory at Camden Yards.

Edwin Diaz, another representative for the Mets at next week’s All-Star Game, closed the game with a scoreless ninth, while Juascal Brazobán sealed the deal with a save.

This win marked the Mets’ fifth in six games, a nice boost after they dropped the final game of the Metro Series on Sunday.

Soto’s crucial single in the tenth brought Lindor, who was the automatic runner, home, against Yenie Kano. Brazobán then efficiently wrapped up the game with a perfect inning.

Clay Holmes faced a tough sixth inning, allowing four runs without securing any outs, which put the Mets in a 5-2 deficit.

Overall, he allowed five hits in five innings, managing only five strikeouts and a walk. This performance marked Holmes’ fifth consecutive start without completing six innings.

Holmes struggled with Cedric Mullins, walking him three times, which eventually led to Jackson Holiday hitting an RBI single after Mullins advanced to second.

Despite the situation, the Mets found opportunities, yet Alonso’s grounder resulted in a double play, limiting their scoring chances.

Before the fourth inning, the Mets’ only hit was a two-out single from Brett Batty.

Brandon Young had a strong five-inning showing, not allowing any runs and achieving three strikeouts.

Jesse Winker, Jeff McNeil, and Lewis Torrens had minimal impact on the game, while Kevin Gausman, a former Orioles pitcher, once recorded a perfect inning back in 2018.

However, the Mets began to show signs of life against Young in the sixth inning.

Ronny Mauricio ignited the rally with Baty and Brandon Nimmo hitting back-to-back doubles, pulling the Mets ahead 2-1.

Then, left-handed Gregory Soto entered the game and managed to retire Juan Soto, who was a third pinch hitter after Alonso was intentionally walked.

The issues for Holmes resurfaced when he faced a challenging holiday stretch.

Jordan Westberg and Gunnar Henderson loaded the bases, leading to a right-handed double from Ryan O’Hern after a pitching coach visit.

In facing Ramon Laureano, Holmes allowed a two-run single that increased the Orioles’ lead to 5-2.

Richard Laveradi got two outs before Laureano was tagged out while trying to advance to third base.

In the seventh, Holiday hit a solo homer against Alex Carrillo, extending the Orioles’ lead to 6-2. Carrillo made his MLB debut after pitching in independent leagues for the last four years but gave up a run in his 1¹/₃ innings.

Lindor responded with a powerful two-run homer in the eighth, closing the gap to 6-4.

Nimmo started the eighth with a single before Lindor belted a 97 mph fastball over the center field fence for his 19th homer of the season.

Soto followed with a single, setting the stage for Alonso’s two-run homer, his 21st of the season, tying the game at 6-6. This brought Alonso’s RBI total to 75 for the year.

Reed Garrett successfully navigated through the eighth inning, getting O’Hern out and then forcing a double play to end the frame.

Colton Couser managed a single and advanced to second base, showing some life for the Orioles.
