Mets Fall to Cardinals in Extra Innings

ST. LOUIS — The Mets’ struggle to hit continued as they faced the Cardinals, leaving little margin for error for their pitchers.

On Wednesday, the Mets ended up losing 2-1 in the 11th inning, thanks to a walk-off hit from Mason Wynn at Busch Stadium. It was tough for pitcher Tobias Myers as he dealt with the loss, which marked the Mets’ third defeat in their last four games.

The team was a dismal 0-for-11 when it came to scoring with runners in scoring position, while Juan Soto’s lone home run provided their only run.

This was Myers’ second outing as a reliever, and he intentionally walked automatic runner Ivan Herrera to start the 11th. He then induced a ground ball that turned into a double play. But Wynn’s final hit, just out of reach for a diving Carson Benge, sealed the game.

Freddy Peralta, aiming for improvement, pitched 5 1/3 innings without a decision, allowing three hits, striking out seven, walking two, and giving up one unearned run. This was a notable upgrade from his debut against the Pirates last week where he allowed four earned runs in five innings.

In the first inning, Peralta was hit by Herrera’s single, leading to a stretch where he retired 11 batters. Nolan Gorman walked in the fifth and went on to score an RBI.

It wasn’t until the fifth that the Mets finally got a runner past first base when Mark Vientos hit a double. Following that, Marcus Semien walked, but Francisco Alvarez ended the inning with a strikeout.

Peralta showed resilience in the fifth, walking Gorman but then getting out of trouble by striking out Victor Scott II, despite Gorman’s advance to third.

Soto launched his first home run of the season, a fly ball that hit the inside of the foul pole, marking the Mets’ first run. Then in the sixth, Francisco Lindor capitalized on Gorman’s fielding error to take the lead but was unfortunately picked off. Soto’s home run came just three pitches later.

Later in the sixth, Gorman tied the game with a two-out RBI single, taking advantage of the situation when Peralta left the game with one out and runners on first and second. Huascar Brozoban induced a groundout but then gave up the tying single to Gorman.

In the seventh, Luis Robert Jr. singled, but despite a strong effort from Alvarez to interfere with the catcher, pinch hitter Benji struck out against left-handed pitcher Jojo Romero, leaving a potential winning run on second base.

Jorge Polanco managed a double in the ninth, but the Mets couldn’t advance pinch runner Jared Young, with Robert, Brett Batty, and Marcus Semien all going down one after the other.

In the ninth, Wynn walked against Devin Williams, stole second base, but was stranded as Williams struck out Sages and Jordan Alker, sending the game into extra innings.

The 10th inning was no better; Lindor walked but Soto popped out on the very first pitch with two outs and runners on first and second.

In the 11th, the Mets loaded the bases, but unfortunately, Semien was unable to capitalize, leading to yet another tough loss for the team.
