Mets top the farm system rankings while top prospects await their MLB debut

Steve Cohen’s plans are starting to pay off.

Since becoming the majority owner in 2020, Cohen focused on rebuilding the Mets’ farm system to create a sustainable talent pool for the major league roster.

During free agency, he made historic moves, allowing the Mets to avoid trading away valuable prospects for talent, a shift from previous strategies.

As a result, the Mets now boast the top farm system in Major League Baseball, according to the latest ESPN rankings released on Tuesday.

Previously, they were positioned ninth in preseason rankings.

Notably, four prospects are listed in the top 100 of the MLB pipeline, all of whom have made triple-A or major league debuts: outfielder Carson Benge (No. 20), utility player Jet Williams (No. 30), pitcher Nolan McLean (No. 37), and pitcher Jonaton (No. 44).

Recently called up, McLean has made two starts, allowing just two runs over 12 and a third innings.

The Mets appear to be reconsidering their plans and might call up Jonaton this season, as reported by Mike Puma.

Brandon Sproat, the Mets’ fifth-ranked prospect, hasn’t cracked the top 100 yet but may also get a chance this year.

Typically, pitchers can make an impact more quickly than highly-ranked position players, but those position players are also deemed ready to contribute soon.

David Stearns, president of baseball operations, noted during a recent podcast episode that both Benge and Williams are making significant strides in their development—something that is recognized not just internally but throughout the industry.

Though uncertain of timelines, Stearns expressed confidence that they could soon be valuable contributors to the team.

Other notable prospects like Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Ronnie Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuña, have already secured their spots on the major league roster.
