Life Sentence for Kidnapper of San Diego Teen
A 24-year-old man from Mexico, Brian Alexis Patron Lopez, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Miguel Anthony Rendon just weeks before his high school graduation. The tragic incident occurred on May 30, 2020. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California reported that Rendon’s family was desperately trying to meet ransom demands of up to $3,000 or methamphetamine at the time of the crime.
During a charged sentencing hearing, both the judge and Rendon’s family expressed their anguish. One relative spoke out, saying, “Every day I wake up with pain that will never go away. I want the defendant to carry the weight of what he did for the rest of his life.”
Judge William Hayes addressed Patron directly, stating, “You literally caused your victim’s death. You executed him, turned around, and walked away.”
Rendon was taken from her hotel room in Tijuana, where he was pistol-whipped before being forced into a car. He was then transported to Patron’s neighborhood, where the harrowing ordeal continued. The kidnappers demanded a ransom via cellphone video, insisting on money and drugs in exchange for the boy’s release.
Emma Medrano, Rendon’s mother, recounted the graphic details of her son’s condition during the abduction. “His heart almost stopped. He was tied up, blood was pouring out of his face, he could barely speak,” she told reporters. The nightmare concluded a day later when Rendon was shot on a desolate hillside while his mother was in the process of paying the ransom.
Rendon’s body was returned to the U.S. two years after the murder, found in a cardboard box. Before his abduction, he had plans to enlist in the Marines following his graduation from Hoover High School in San Diego.
During the trial, jurors viewed surveillance footage of the kidnapping outside the hotel. Aside from the life sentence, Patron received an additional 35 years for taking a hostage and causing his death, with all sentences to be served concurrently.
