Mexican fans added a festive atmosphere in England as they brought music and fireworks ahead of the World Cup Round of 16 match at the Azteca Stadium. However, initial reports suggest that their celebratory noise hasn’t significantly disturbed the England players in their hotel.
Social media showcased lively scenes with trumpets, drums, and dancing outside the Marriott Santa Fe Hotel. In response, police in riot gear surrounded the area to manage the enthusiastic fans who were determined to make their presence known, even in the early hours.
One local, Cesar Roldan, shared his thoughts, saying, “I wanted to see how many people would be here. I think it’s a positive thing, but it won’t affect tomorrow’s game. England players won’t even hear us.” Meanwhile, a mother was overheard telling her son that this is simply part of their tradition, although it was noted to be much less disruptive compared to the pre-match celebrations during the Round of 32 match against Ecuador, which had drawn complaints.
Before last week’s match, where Mexico triumphed 2-0, Ecuadorian fans had gathered outside the Westin Santa Fe hotel, prompting a formal protest from their soccer federation. They condemned the disruption, stating it did not align with the principles of fair play and unity that the World Cup represents.
The federation urged authorities to take action to ensure the safety of all associated with the event. Following these concerns, police set up roadblocks in preparation for England’s arrival.
Mexico entered the World Cup with an impressive four wins in a row, and a victory would see them reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986. On the other hand, England’s Harry Kane has been in remarkable form, netting five goals in the tournament, helping them to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the earlier rounds.
The victor of this upcoming match will advance to face either Brazil or Norway in Miami on Saturday.
