Mexican Flag Has Emerged as a Key Symbol of LA Riots

CNN has pointed out that the Mexican flag has become a “definitive symbol” during the riots in Los Angeles, California, which also involve actions beyond the scope of immigration and customs enforcement (ICE).

Images and videos from the riots show individuals setting cars on fire, attacking police, and throwing bricks while displaying Mexican flags.

In a piece titled “The Mexican flag has become a decisive symbol of the LA protest,” CNN discusses how the use of foreign flags by protesters represents “solidarity with immigrants and a condemnation of the Trump administration’s actions.”

However, the act of waving foreign flags connects to generations of individuals from Mexico and other Latin American countries, especially those living in California. This insight comes from UCLA professor Hinojosa-Ojeda. [Emphasis added]

“The flag represents their families and their community,” he added. “It’s not about international aggression.” [Emphasis added]

The prominence of the Mexican flag in the riots has led organizers to reportedly begin distributing American flags after receiving significant criticism.

Vice President JD Vance described the rioters as “rebels” and argued that these events illustrate the need for Republicans to support President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill.”

“Insurgencies displaying foreign flags are targeting immigration enforcement officers, yet many American political leaders have deemed border enforcement undesirable,” Vance stated in a post. I shared it on X. “It’s time to enact President Trump’s beautiful bill and enhance border security.”

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently urged Mexican Americans to protest a proposed tax on remittances.

“We will mobilize if we need to,” Sheinbaum announced to the crowd last month. “We oppose taxes on remittances sent by our compatriots in the US to Mexico.”

In reaction to this, Sen. Eric Schmidt (R-MO) has proposed an amendment that would increase the remittance tax from 3.5% to 15%.
