Mexican Government Requests Drug Lord’s Extradition for Journalist’s Murder

Mexican federal prosecutors have requested the extradition of a convicted drug lord who was recently re-arrested on new drug charges. Among the charges Mexico is prosecuting the drug lord is his role as one of the masterminds in the murder of famous Mexican journalist and author Javier Valdez.

This week, Mexico's Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero announced that his office has filed a complaint against the U.S. government regarding the murder of Javier Valdez, a well-known journalist who founded Rio Doce News in 2017.・It was announced that a request had been made for the extradition of Mr. “El Mini Rick” López Serrano. Exit.

Mexican authorities arrested and charged various individuals involved in the actual killings. However, according to Gertz Manero, López is suspected of being the mastermind who ordered the killing over an investigation into Valdez that revealed infighting within factions of the Sinaloa cartel.

Gertz Manero said Mexico made a similar extradition request in 2017 but was denied because López was a protected witness.

As Breitbart Texas reported in 2017, Damaso López surrendered to U.S. authorities in California seeking protection from his rivals in Mexico. Damaso and his father led a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel known as “El Licenciado,” or “Lawyer,” which was at odds with other top leaders. Mexican authorities arrested El Licenciado earlier that year. His arrest forced his son to flee to the United States and become an informant and protected witness.

El Mini Rick pleaded guilty to various drug charges and cooperated with authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence. After completing his sentence, Lopez granted interviews and appeared on podcasts, making him a hot topic of discussion.

However, earlier this month, U.S. federal authorities rearrested El Mini Rick on new drug charges related to the distribution of fentanyl. He is in prison awaiting trial.
