Mexican man receives 5-year sentence for bringing drugged children into the U.S.

Sentencing in Human Smuggling Case

A Mexican national has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his involvement in a troubling human smuggling operation that specifically targeted unaccompanied minors. The operation relied on sedating the children using candy infused with drugs.

Manuel Valenzuela, a 35-year-old Mexican citizen residing in El Paso, Texas, received his sentence after pleading guilty to several charges, including conspiring to transport aliens and multiple counts of smuggling undocumented individuals for financial gain.

This sentencing is considered a significant achievement for federal authorities, who noted that the tactics employed by Valenzuela and his accomplices showed a complete disregard for the well-being of children and human life.

Court documents reveal that Valenzuela played a key role in a network that illegally transported vulnerable children, aged between 5 and 13, from Juárez, Mexico, into the U.S. To avoid detection during these crossings, members of the smuggling ring gave the children drug-laced candy to sedate them.

Once the children were incapacitated, drivers attempted to evade border security at entry points by presenting legitimate U.S. ID documents, falsely claiming they belonged to the sedated minors and that the smugglers were their parents.

The dangerous aspects of this operation came to light during one incident when an unaccompanied minor suffered severe reactions to the forced sedation. The child was taken to a local hospital, where medical staff diagnosed the issue as “acute THC poisoning,” which occurs when the body consumes more THC than it can handle.

Prosecutors highlighted that Valenzuela’s main duties included receiving the children once they crossed into the U.S. and distributing payments to the drivers involved in the smuggling.

This investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso along with the U.S. Border Patrol, supported by the National Targeting Center of Customs and Border Protection and the Justice Department’s Joint Task Force Alpha, focused on dismantling significant human smuggling operations linked to transnational criminal groups.

Justice Department officials used this case to deliver a strong message to international smuggling networks, emphasizing the commitment to pursuing and dismantling operations that exploit children for profit. Valenzuela will serve his five-year sentence and will then face immigration consequences.
