Mexican Navy Vessel Crashes Into Brooklyn Bridge, Resulting in 2 Deaths and More Than a Dozen Injuries

A Mexican Navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and injuring many others.

The vessel, called “Cuauhtémoc,” was on a scheduled tour with 277 people aboard when it struck the bridge’s underside. In videos capturing the moment, the ship appears to crash into the bridge, damaging its mast in the process. The impact left several individuals at the top of the mast visibly shaken.

Following the incident, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences on social media, highlighting the tragic loss of the two crew members. She stated her sympathy and support for their families.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of the two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc training vessel, who lost their lives in an unfortunate accident at the port of New York. Our sympathy and support goes to their families.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicated that the collision was due to a power failure on the ship. He reported that, among the 277 people on board, 19 sustained injuries, with two in serious condition and two fatalities.

“Tonight, the tall Mexican Navy ship, Cuauhtémoc, lost power and struck the Brooklyn Bridge. We pray for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to the first responders who acted quickly.” He also reassured the public that initial inspections indicated no significant damage to the bridge, which remains open.

A representative from the U.S. Coast Guard later updated that 21 individuals were injured during the incident. Before the collision, the Cuauhtémoc was docked at Manhattan Pier 17 and was scheduled to depart for Iceland.

The National Transportation Safety Board is initiating a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic collision.
