Mexican politicians faced significant backlash following remarks made by a local party leader who suggested US officials should revoke her visa and “punch it.”
This incident occurred when Melissa Cornejo, a leader of Mexico’s ruling Morena party, shared a message in Los Angeles expressing support for the riots, stating, “They intend to get visas for those they share.”
Her post featured an image of a burning car with graffiti and a man waving a Mexican flag beside it.
In response, US Secretary of State Christopher Landau addressed the situation directly, clarifying that while he couldn’t cancel the visa, he instructed his staff to do so. He expressed surprise upon learning that Cornejo did not actually possess a visa. He added that individuals who promote violence are unwelcome in the US.
Following Landau’s comments, a high-ranking member of the Morena party quickly distanced herself from Cornejo. Luisa Alcalde, the current president of the party, stated that Cornejo’s opinions do not reflect the principles of the pacifist Morena movement.
This controversy arises as Mexican politicians have shown support for protesters in Los Angeles and called for further protests against potential US taxes on remittances sent to Mexico.
Breitbart Texas reported that DHS Executive Director Kristi Noem urged Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to address her support for protesters amid rising tensions surrounding the LA riots. Sheinbaum countered Noem’s accusations by emphasizing her stance against violence, advocating only for peaceful protests.
