Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a warning to US President-elect Donald Trump, who threatened to impose tariffs over ongoing immigration and drug trafficking issues.
Claudia Sheinbaum told a morning press conference: “We will continue to respond with tariffs and other tariffs until we end up endangering ordinary businesses.”
The comment was part of a letter Sheinbaum read aloud and said she would send to Trump. The letter was in response to a series of comments made by the president-elect, who said one of his first orders of business would be to impose high tariffs on Mexico due to the ongoing border crisis, and if China defaults. They argued that the reason was to impose even higher tariffs. Stop fentanyl production.
Scheinbaum said Mexico has worked to improve its process for moving asylum seekers and migrants safely through Mexico, resulting in fewer illegal encounters reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“Half of the migrants are doing so through an application called CBP One,” she said of the number of migrants seeking travel authorization to reach the U.S. border through Mexico.
Sheinbaum also claimed that Mexico made large-scale seizures and shut down drug manufacturing labs under her watch.
Mexico's new president used her letter to tell Trump that if the U.S. spent some of its war money on addressing the root causes of immigration, the problem would be solved by now. I tried to preach.
