Mexican President Requests More K-Pop Concerts from South Korea

Diplomatic Request for BTS Concerts in Mexico

This week, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stirred some controversy by announcing that she had formally reached out to the South Korean government with a request for additional concerts by K-pop sensation BTS in Mexico. This diplomatic effort comes amid Mexico’s ongoing struggles with rising cartel violence and increasing pressure from the U.S. to combat these criminal organizations.

At a press conference, Sheinbaum explained that the move was inspired by concerns raised by young people about high ticket prices and limited availability for the group’s shows. To address these worries, Sheinbaum sent a communication to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, urging him to arrange for more performances or to set up large screens to enhance the experience for fans.

The South Korean embassy confirmed receipt of the letter and mentioned that the government is currently reviewing how to respond, as reported by local Mexican news outlet el universal.

Sheinbaum mentioned that she is waiting on a reply from the South Korean authorities. This diplomatic issue coincided with her dealing with the aftermath of a violent cartel-related shooting at a soccer field in Guanajuato state, where 11 individuals lost their lives and 12 were injured. Investigators have linked this massacre to feuding cartels. It appears that five victims were affiliated with the Jalisco New Generation cartel, while the attack is believed to have been executed by members of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, both vying for control over fuel theft and drug distribution in the region.
