Mexican President Sends Diplomats to Prevent Trump from Targeting Cartels in Mexico

Sheinbaum’s Diplomatic Response to U.S. Military Threats

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed her foreign minister to engage with senior U.S. officials in a bid to enhance cooperation aimed at preventing any U.S. military incursions into Mexico to target drug cartels. This move seems to be part of her ongoing strategy to shield the influential drug-trafficking organizations within her country.

This announcement follows comments from U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who asserted that his administration has been successful in curtailing drug shipments but acknowledged the continued dominance of cartels in Mexico.

In a recent interview, Trump stated, “We’re going to really start working on the cartels,” signaling a potential shift in U.S. policy.

Reactions in Mexico were notable, especially among media outlets and opposition political groups that have persistently highlighted the nexus of corruption and collusion between drug cartels and Mexico’s political elite.

The situation intensified after Trump ordered a military action in Venezuela. Following the capture of drug leader Nicolás Maduro, many in Mexico began suggesting that similar measures might be necessary within their borders, hinting at the involvement of political figures linked to cartels.

During a press briefing, Sheinbaum stated she had instructed Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente to speak directly with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio or President Trump, emphasizing a need to bolster international law enforcement cooperation and the overall partnership between the two nations.

Since Trump took office, Sheinbaum has aimed to address U.S. concerns related to drug cartels, including economic sanctions and the prospect of military action. Under her administration, numerous high-profile drug lords have been extradited to the U.S., and federal law enforcement has closely collaborated with American agencies to dismantle drug manufacturing and smuggling operations. Nonetheless, despite these efforts, the pervasive influence of cartels in Mexico seems largely unchanged, as they continue to operate with minimal repercussions.

A report highlighted that Sheinbaum has firmly opposed any form of direct U.S. military intervention on Mexican soil, suggesting that such actions would undermine the rights of individuals associated with these criminal organizations.
