Mexican Sex Trafficker Sentenced to 15 Years
A major investigation by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) led to the arrest of Hugo Hernandez Belazuquez, who was extradited from Mexico to the United States in February 2021.
Belazuquez pleaded guilty to charges of sex trafficking and received his sentence on July 10th.
In court, prosecutors detailed how Belazuquez and his family utilized force, fraud, and coercion to involve women in prostitution within the U.S. They led a young Mexican woman to believe she was receiving a marriage proposal from a man in the U.S. However, upon arriving, she was forced into a life of sexual exploitation. Many victims endured physical violence, were compelled to undergo abortions, and were often drugged. They were manipulated with threats against their families back in Mexico if they disobeyed.
The trafficking ring operated across multiple states, including New York, Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, and more.
The prosecutor noted, “For nearly a decade, the defendant and his family conducted this brutal campaign through manipulation and coercion. Many victims sought out these relationships under false pretenses of love and support.” The importance of survivor testimony was emphasized in achieving this verdict.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocera Jr. highlighted the need to assist victims in their recovery journey.
This case underscores a concerning rise in prostitution, which some commentators attribute to shifts in policies during the Biden administration.
Many young individuals, both women and boys, have reportedly found themselves forced into prostitution as they sought to repay debts incurred during their trafficking journey.
