Mia Sara Shares Her Experience on “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”
Almost four decades since “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” became an iconic film, Mia Sara opened up about her behind-the-scenes experience, which was quite different from what many might expect. In a recent discussion, Sara, who played Sloane Peterson in the 1986 classic, spoke about her journey in acting and her challenges while working with director John Hughes.
“Honestly, making ‘Ferris Bueller’ wasn’t a great experience for me, which is why I tend to avoid interviews,” she confided. “However, I understand the film’s significance and how it affects its fans. But let’s just say, things didn’t go smoothly with John.” Sara described Hughes as a “strange guy” during her reflections.
Contrasting Experiences
Interestingly, while the film was a hit, Sara’s time during its production had its share of difficulties. She recounted how Hughes wanted them to bond over classic French New Wave films, but it didn’t always vibe well with her since she felt somewhat out of place amidst more seasoned actors. “I was just a kid from New York and didn’t quite have the emotional maturity to navigate the egos that were there,” she added.
Looking back, she expressed mixed feelings about her acting career. Although she had moments of pride in her work, she ultimately found the experience lacking in fulfillment. “The audition grind was tough for me,” Sara admitted. “I’ve ventured more into writing poetry, which feels much more rewarding.” Yet, despite her challenges, she acknowledges the film’s lasting cultural significance. Her children often mention how their friends connect her to the movie, and it’s a little surreal for her.
Filming Dynamics
Meanwhile, the filming experience varied for others in the cast. Jennifer Grey, who played Ferris’ sister Jeannie, secretly dated Matthew Broderick during production. “We had to keep it under wraps, and it wasn’t easy,” she shared. In fact, during a scene together, she found it hard not to laugh, nearly hurting herself in the process of trying to keep it together.
On the other hand, Sara humorously noted her own feelings for Broderick, saying, “I had a huge crush on him, but it was mostly one-sided.” Their dynamics, intertwined with friendship and unexpressed feelings, added another layer to the filming experience.
A Lasting Legacy
When reflecting on the film’s impact, Sara quipped about how people still recognize her from that role. “My kids say their friends are amazed and often comment, ‘Wow, your mom was in that?'” It’s apparent that despite her mixed feelings about her time in Hollywood, the film—and her role in it—remains part of pop culture history.
As the years pass, the film continues to resonate with audiences, solidifying its status as one of the most beloved teen comedies of its time, with Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron still capturing the hearts of new generations.
