Miami Athletic Director Calls for Tiebreaker Review

On Monday, Miami’s athletic director, Dan Radakovich, urged the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to reassess its tiebreaker rules after the Hurricanes found themselves out of the conference championship game, which might affect their chances for a place in the College Football Playoff.

Despite finishing the season strongly with a decisive 38-7 win over the Panthers in Pittsburgh, marking their 10th victory, Miami is facing an unclear playoff future. This victory is significant, as it represents the first time the program has achieved back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins since 2002 and 2003.

However, due to a complex tiebreaking system that considers multiple teams with two conference losses, Miami will miss out on competing, as unranked Duke (7-5) moves on to face No. 18 Virginia in the title game.

Having missed the opportunity for an automatic playoff bid, Miami is now dependent on the selection committee’s decision for postseason inclusion.

Radakovich highlighted the need for improvement within the current rules. He mentioned in an ESPN interview, “It’s too complicated. We should look for alternatives that simplify the process while still considering the scenario of multiple teams tying.” He expressed concern that the previous systems may not have anticipated a scenario with many teams vying for the same postseason position.

As the next College Football Playoff rankings are expected to be released soon, Radakovich made a public appeal in an open letter. Drawing from his four years of experience on the CFP committee, he shared insights about the complexities of team rankings and emphasized the importance of memorable games like Miami’s win against Notre Dame, which showcased the excitement surrounding college football. He concluded by urging that these kinds of moments should hold significance in the ranking process.

Even with a head-to-head victory against a competing team, Miami’s path to the playoffs looks challenging.
