Micah Parsons' podcast upset Cowboys teammates, including Dak Prescott: 'Self-centered'

A former teammate of Micah Parsons expressed the wish that he would tone down his public persona.

Some ex-Cowboys players viewed him as “selfish” and “egotistical.” As reported by Sports Illustrated, he ranked various teammates, including quarterback Dak Prescott, on his podcast, “Edge with Micah Parsons.”

This created a shift in locker room dynamics during his contract negotiations with Jerry Jones, ultimately leading to a surprising trade to Green Bay.

“It’s important to note that this negotiation differed from the previous ones,” wrote Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated. “Zack Martin, Ceedee Lamb, and Prescott were well-liked in the locker room, while Parsons’ rankings indicated a different opinion of his teammates.”

Parsons’ contract negotiations stand out as one of the more notable failures among Dallas stars, especially after Martin secured a new deal in 2023, and both Prescott and Lamb did so in 2024.

Many had believed the Cowboys would manage Parsons’ situation effectively, but they ended up trading him for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

There’s much discussion about whether this was the right choice, but these insights help explain why owner Jones made decisions beyond just financial considerations.

The perception of players in the locker room and by coaches can significantly influence such decisions.

Parsons is quite charismatic and media-savvy, as evident from his podcast, but it seems his teammates are less enthusiastic about tuning in.

He has been running his podcast for two years, although reports suggest that Prescott had some reservations about it.

Breer also mentioned that some around the Cowboys noticed a different side of Parsons when the cameras were off.

“During camp in California, Parsons seemed to engage well with his new defensive coach. He maintained a strong training routine, performed well during walk-throughs, and was attentive in meetings,” Breer wrote recently. “However, a notable change was observed in how he acted in practice, depending on whether the camera was rolling.”

Teams often hesitate when a player is perceived as “selfish.” While Parsons has enjoyed impressive seasons with over 12 sacks yearly, negotiation breakdowns led the Cowboys to believe they could perform well without him.

“We believe we can succeed with the direction we’ve taken,” Jones stated. “This isn’t a negative reflection on Micah; it’s simply our reality.”
