Michael Irvin’s Celebratory Stunt Following Miami’s Upset Victory
On Wednesday night, I found myself thinking, “What’s going on with Michael Irvin?” The Miami grad and NFL Hall of Famer made quite a scene after his alma mater’s surprising 24-14 upset. He walked around with a rather unimpressive water cooler draped in what he described as “Ohio State apparel, from belt to butt.”
At 59, Irvin still knows how to capture attention. He’s even transformed a water cooler into an audience for his WWE-style promos, turning it into an amusing target. “I warned you guys not to come to this stadium,” he said, eyeing the cooler that stayed, well, just a cooler.
Repeatedly hitting the cooler, he entertained onlookers with playful pauses, proclaiming, “I told you, don’t come, don’t come to this stadium. Stop, come back, no, more. That’s it, baby!” His enthusiasm was palpable as he flashed “The U” logo to the cheering crowd.
Irvin didn’t shy away from some light bragging, either. “Belt to butt,” he declared. “We earned that belt weekly, and we’ll continue until we’re back at the stadium for the national championship.” He signed off with, “Same deal next week, same belt channel, same belt time. Belt to butt.”
With the shock of this upset, it’s no wonder Irvin felt justified in celebrating. Few, if any, anticipated Miami would pull off such a feat against the defending champions, who were favored by over a touchdown going into the game. However, Miami surprised everyone with a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime, making pivotal plays to thwart Ohio State’s attempts to rally. I vaguely recall Carson Beck completing a key third-down play that really shifted the momentum.
Beck himself, laughing, remarked to ESPN, “Look, I’ve lost my mind. I blacked out. All I had to do was go out and shoot, just blacked out playing my favorite game.”
Irvin shared myriad clips from the sidelines, and even took a swing at a second cooler, sans his red gear. Miami is now gearing up for the quarterfinals, facing the victor of Thursday’s showdown between No. 3 Georgia and No. 6 Ole Miss.
As Irvin cheekily put it in another clip, “It’s December 31st, I’m flipping the calendar, and guess what? I’m done saying Happy New Year. It’s a happy you year, happy you year, yeah, bring me that mug. Let’s say happy you year.”
