Michael Jordan’s Lawsuit Against NASCAR

Michael Jordan, the iconic basketball legend, shared recently that he tackled his legal battle with NASCAR much like he approached his six NBA championships.

While many details surrounding his settlement remain vague, one thing is evident: Jordan was determined not to back down.

“I was giving it my all. I was going to win,” he stated emphatically.

As the owner of 23XI Racing, Jordan filed a lawsuit against NASCAR in October 2024, accusing the organization of unfair practices regarding team participation. The two sides eventually reached a settlement, which he discussed during a recent interview, noting that he felt the need to protect the future of the sport for his teams and drivers.

Long a fan of NASCAR, Jordan admitted he didn’t fully grasp the complexities of the sport while he was immersed in basketball. However, once he became involved, he began to realize how things were operating.

“It was biased. It was wrong. This sport was not set up for long-term success for the individuals involved,” Jordan remarked.

He highlighted the disparities between NASCAR’s ownership structure and its racing teams.

“They seemed to have a good setup,” he told interviewer Gayle King.

Jordan was motivated to make a lasting mark on NASCAR, believing that pursuing the lawsuit was essential—win or lose, he wanted to leave his name in the sport.

“I was nervous. Courtrooms aren’t really my thing. But I was giving it my all. I was going to win,” he said.

Jordan, who is now 63, clarified that his intention was not to wage war against NASCAR, yet he embraced the challenge with the spirit of a fighter.

“This fight was essential. Even if I faced defeat, I wanted to highlight that change is necessary in this sport. So, I went into it feeling that, in a way, I had already won,” he expressed.

Following a December 2025 settlement, Jordan’s team geared up for the 2026 season. Driver Tyler Reddick notably kicked off the season by winning the first three races for 23XI Racing, marking a historic achievement that hadn’t been seen in 77 years.

In a recent chat, Jordan also touched on his enduring competitive nature and how NASCAR serves as a significant outlet for his desire to compete.

“It’s not quite the same as playing in Chicago…but I think that’s what keeps me driven,” he said, reflecting on his past battles on the court. “I wish I could still harness that same intensity for basketball… Yeah, I would love to.”
