Michael Kay Reflects on His Broadcasting Style

Michael Kay, the voice of the Yankees for Yes Network, recently played with Blue Jays announcer Jamie Campbell and shared insights about his approach to sports commentary during a conversation with Post’s Joel Sherman and John Heyman.

“I often find myself in these intense situations, and honestly, it stings,” Kay remarked in the latest episode of “Show” with Sherman and Heyman. “I wish I could handle things differently, but you know, Joel, we both share similar backgrounds. We’ve taken different paths, and I feel compelled to push back, particularly when there’s a sense of injustice.”

Kay expressed a touch of frustration, saying, “I’m a bit of a flawed person. I just want to enjoy the game and be fair. It’s a challenge.” His recent comments followed some pointed remarks directed at the Blue Jays.

The situation escalated after the Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep against the Yankees, creating a notable moment in the AL East. Campbell and the Blue Jays playfully showcased their brooms on air, highlighting their success, and said, “We need to acknowledge that the Blue Jays are in first place now.”

Kay couldn’t help but respond to Campbell’s remarks. “What I told Jamie is that I’m no casual fan; I can confidently say the Blue Jays are playing well. But, as a broadcaster, I believe there are certain standards. If our studio analyst, Jack Curry, were swinging a broom after a Yankees game, he’d likely face serious repercussions.

He further elaborated, “It’s like this: we shouldn’t celebrate casually during an ordinary game. Let’s reserve that for the playoffs; that’s when it truly matters.”

Also a host of an ESPN radio show, Kay mentioned that he and Campbell exchanged messages afterward, with Campbell noting the respect they held for each other despite the rivalry.

Looking ahead, Kay expressed eagerness to meet Campbell again when the Yankees and Blue Jays face off in Toronto for a three-game series starting July 21.

Just last month, Kay stirred some controversy by targeting Mets fans, dubbing them “an info-free knit wit” in response to Juan Soto’s comments about Mets management.
