Michael Kim and Si Woo Kim compelled to cross the US-Canada border due to Korean BBQ error

Michael Kim and Siwoo Kim had quite the adventure while trying to enjoy Korean barbecue in Detroit, as they shared in a funny social media update on Tuesday evening.

In a lengthy post on X, Michael Kim detailed how a Google Maps mix-up, initiated by Siwoo Kim, led them across the Canadian border, resulting in a quirky interaction with border agents. It’s not clear if this was a recent event or something from earlier, but both golfers are likely participating in this week’s Rocket Classic in Detroit.

The whole situation began when Michael texted Siwoo to join him for dinner at what he considered a “solid” Korean barbecue spot in Detroit.

“He looked up the restaurant on Google Maps and just started driving, not really thinking it through. But before he knew it, he was heading right toward the U.S.-Canada border, where there was a restaurant with the same name,” Michael recounted.

“He didn’t have his passport, just his wallet. By the time he figured it out, he was on a one-way street with no way to turn around.”

When he approached the customs gate and spoke to an officer, he said he was just a guy trying to meet a friend for dinner. The officer reassured him, saying, “No worries, but you’ll need to cross into Canada first and speak to the officers there.”

However, when they crossed into Canada to turn back, they ended up stuck in a long wait—about 45 minutes.

Upon finally reaching a police officer to explain their dilemma, Siwoo found himself surrounded by eight officers after initially trying to clarify things.

“He was super nervous, trying to explain that he’d just come from a golf tournament,” Michael recalled. “One officer didn’t know quite what to do, so he kept calling for backup, and soon enough, there were eight of them! They checked the car for any suspicious items and, after a bit of questioning, let him go.”

Fortunately, the story concluded on a happy note, with both golfers making it to the Korean BBQ restaurant—albeit 90 minutes later than planned.

Siwoo even poked fun at the situation on her Instagram Story, sharing a screenshot of the post and adding, “Returned safely without a passport.”
