New Album Highlights Efforts for Democracy

A fresh album has emerged featuring artists like Michael Stipe, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, and the band 400 Units. These musicians contribute to “Democracy Forward,” a project from a legal organization dedicated to fighting back against policies from the Trump administration.

The album, which combines songs and spoken word pieces, was released on Tuesday. Set to ship by the end of the month, the double album from Democracy Forward will see vinyl copies available in early July. Other notable contributors include Tyler Childers, Brittany Howard, Wilco, and John Prine.

Michael Stipe spoke on the album, emphasizing the value of democracy, stating, “We believe in the importance of democracy and the ability to preserve it.” His words resonate with the mission of the group.

Another contributor, Rem Reed, reinforced this sentiment, remarking, “The world is dependent on us. This battle is not over. The day is not over.”

Recently, Democracy Forward took legal action representing a coalition of democratic groups against the State Department, contesting the Trump administration’s plans to send over 200 immigrants to Central American prisons.

Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, expressed gratitude towards the artists supporting civil rights through their music, stating, “When so many communities across the country are hurt and targeted, music, art, and expression help us connect people to our community and create conditions of courage.”

Perryman added, “We are extremely grateful to the artists who have dedicated their music to support American rights and democracy during this consequential period. We each play a role in strengthening democracy, and every voice is important.”

The album, priced at $46 and available for pre-sale this week, will have all proceeds directed toward the initiatives of Democracy Forward. According to the organization, funds will support legal representation for individuals and communities advocating for their constitutional rights.
