Michael Jackson Biopic Surpasses Expectations

Despite facing a flurry of negative critiques, the Michael Jackson biopic has made significant waves, even exceeding Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic ever.

Some critics, in what feels like a masked form of oppression, aimed to shame audiences and steer them away from the film. This likely stems from the movie’s decision not to depict the late pop icon as a child predator.

It’s worth noting that the film wraps up its narrative in 1988, which is five years before any accusations were made. It’s also important to point out that California’s state failed to pursue its case effectively during the 1993 and 2003 lawsuits. Yet, many seem to believe that watching the film makes us question our morality. What if we actually enjoy it? That could be even worse.

Fortunately, audiences aren’t swayed by these negative voices anymore. This film not only turned into a summer blockbuster but also etched its name into record books.

As of Monday, the biopic has grossed $370 million in the U.S. and $607 million from international markets, culminating in a stunning total of $977 million worldwide.

Before this, the title of highest-grossing music biopic was held by 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $217 million domestically and $694 million internationally, totaling $911 million globally.

The previous record for the highest-grossing biopic, across all genres, had recently gone to Oppenheimer, which won the 2023 Oscar for Best Picture. Its domestic earnings reached $330 million, with international revenue at $646 million, adding up to $976 million worldwide.

The Michael Jackson film continues to perform exceptionally well abroad, and it seems on track to exceed the $1 billion mark.

You might wonder why it’s such a hit. The answer lies in its strong appeal to the vast fanbase of Michael Jackson. Unlike franchises like Star Wars or the latest superhero iterations, this film doesn’t attempt to belittle or alienate its core audience. Instead, it captures what resonates with fans: his extraordinary talent.

One of the best biopics of the century, Get On Up, tells the remarkable story of James Brown (portrayed by Chadwick Boseman). While it highlights his many challenges, it doesn’t let those define him—just as Walk the Line and Ray also made sure to showcase the talent of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles, respectively. These films let the genius shine, a quality that fans greatly appreciate, leading to their success.

In contrast, franchises like Star Wars and Joker 2 seem intent on alienating loyal fans, making those who purchase tickets feel foolish. Nobody wants to experience that kind of treatment.
