Michael Tait Addresses the Situation, Admitting ‘I Have Misled My Family, Friends, and Fans’

Michael Tate’s Confession of a Double Life

Former Newsboys lead singer Michael Tate shared a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, revealing that he has led a “double life” for two decades, struggling with substance abuse and engaging in sexual behavior he feels ashamed of. In his candid admission, titled “My Confession,” he expressed his commitment to change, stating he is currently in a treatment center.

Tate reflected, saying, “I feel embarrassed to admit that I have lied and deceived over the years about my life to family, friends, fans, and even my fellow bandmates. I lived two distinctly different lives for most of that time. The person I portrayed on stage wasn’t the same one at home.” He acknowledged the values instilled in him by his God-fearing parents and the love he has had for music, emphasizing that he is now focusing on his recovery and faith.

Once recognized as a prominent voice in contemporary Christian music, Tate began his career in the 1990s with the Grammy-winning group DC Talk before embarking on a solo path and joining Newsboys.

In January, Tate abruptly left the band, without providing a reason. Later reports alleged that he made unwanted sexual advances and was often intoxicated, even reportedly offering cocaine to others.

Tate’s full statement includes feelings of guilt over his past choices. He said, “Sadly, reports of my reckless behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse, are true.” He indicated that he has battled addiction for years and regretted his actions, labeling them as sin without shifting blame to anyone else.

Describing his departure from the band as a necessary step towards seeking help, he recounted his time in a Utah treatment center, where he began to regain his health and clarity. “It’s been a long road ahead,” he wrote. “While I still have much work to do, I am now sober and focused on my journey towards healing.”

He expressed sorrow for the hurt he has caused others, stating, “I am deeply ashamed of my actions, and I hope for forgiveness, though I know I may not deserve it.” In the statement, he underlined the importance of seeking redemption and healing for both himself and those he affected.

Tate reflected on the support he has received from a small circle of professionals, family, and friends as he navigates this challenging period. “They’ve shown me love, grace, and prayer,” he shared, acknowledging that healing often stems from recognizing one’s struggles and seeking help. He concluded with a desire to work quietly on his repentance and healing, away from the public eye.
