Micheal Clemons' recent foolish penalty quickly put the Jets at a disadvantage

Jets’ Performance in Loss to Bills Highlights Penalty Issues

The Jets’ struggles were most apparent in the first quarter, marked by yet another careless penalty from defensive end Michael Clemons, a player known for such mistakes throughout his career.

Facing a third and 19 from the Jets’ 30-yard line in their first drive, Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen attempted a pass to Khalil Shaquille, but Michael Carter II broke it up. Unfortunately for the Jets, Clemons, notorious for his undisciplined play, committed a late hit on Allen, nullifying the defensive stop.

Buffalo capitalized on the situation, eventually scoring a 1-yard rushing touchdown from James Cook, taking an early 7-0 lead.

Clemons, addressing the incident later, said, “I did my best to hit him clean. I have to look at it and see, but they threw the flag in the end.” Despite the blunder, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn brought Clemons back onto the field for the next series, indicating a level of tolerance for mistakes, at least for now.

Glenn remarked, “The problem is, you know they’re going to call it. When you hit the quarterback high or in the head and neck area, that’s what they’re calling now, so we need to be smarter.” There seems to be an ongoing challenge for the Jets to navigate penalty calls while maintaining aggressive defensive play.

Injuries added to the Jets’ woes during the game. Starting quarterback Justin Fields left after suffering a concussion, while edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II went out with an ankle injury. Safety Tony Adams also left with a groin injury, and Carter faced a shoulder issue. Glenn mentioned the need to assess their conditions moving forward.

The Jets’ offensive performance, especially in comparison to their previous week’s game against the Steelers, was disappointing. Fields completed 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards last week, but struggled this time, going just 3 of 11 for 27 yards. The Jets’ rushing game, previously effective with 182 yards against Pittsburgh, faltered against Buffalo, managing only 100 yards, with Brace Hall held to 29 yards on ten carries.

This was quite surprising, given the Jets’ past success in rushing, particularly after allowing 238 rushing yards to the Ravens last week. Left guard John Simpson commented, “Everyone learns from their mistakes. One day, something crazy might happen, and the next, you do your best to not let it happen again.” He added that teams in the league quickly adapt and improve each week, which is something the Jets need to do as well.

As for the Bills, they haven’t lost to the Jets since the 2023 season opener and have dominated the AFC East in recent years. The Jets’ divisional record during this stretch stands at a disappointing 6-24.
