Former first lady Michelle Obama recently shared her thoughts on voters who support President Donald Trump, emphasizing not to lecture them. In a podcast conversation with Sam Fragoso from Talk Easy, she reflected on how backing Trump often stems from a lack of alternatives.
Obama expressed her disappointment with the political landscape post-2016 and indicated that the election outcomes are tied to people’s struggles, particularly concerning healthcare and rising living costs. She mentioned that many voters, like those who supported her husband twice, are angry and feel trapped in their choices.
According to Obama, it’s essential to recognize that anger is a valid reaction, especially when people feel abandoned by conventional politics. She described how labeling voters solely as ‘racist’ overlooks their complex realities. Many, she said, are just seeking different solutions amid their frustrations.
She further noted her concern for the middle class, stating, “I wish more leaders were focusing on helping working people.” Although she no longer identifies with that demographic, she asserts they are decent individuals facing tough situations that sometimes lead them to make choices that aren’t in their best interest.
In a broader context, Obama mentioned that the U.S. has yet to fulfill its democratic promises. Reflecting on the current state of affairs, she described the nation as entering a “junkie” era, where various interpretations of America coexist. This evolution, she posited, is critical for growth, reiterating that each version of America teaches the nation something new about itself.
She pointed to recent tragic events, like ICE shootings, noting how communities react during crises, highlighting their power to support each other. Ultimately, Obama suggested that a healthier society wouldn’t need to justify or prove itself in such troubling ways.
