Michelle Obama Reflects on Challenges as First Lady

Michelle Obama has opened up about her experiences as the first Black woman to serve as First Lady, describing the role as “straining,” particularly regarding her fashion decisions. In a recent podcast episode discussing her new book, “The Look,” she shared her thoughts on how her wardrobe has evolved since leaving the White House.

She highlighted that the position of First Lady is challenging, especially as part of the first Black family to inhabit the White House. “Eight years as First Lady can get a little constricting, right?” she remarked, explaining the weight of representation that comes with being the first in her role. “I felt like I had to set a standard so that others would have opportunities,” she noted.

Obama continued by saying, “When you’re the only one, it’s like you carry this huge burden. You can’t help but feel that if you don’t get it right, it could impact others.” It’s a sentiment many women and people of color understand, she added.

As for her fashion, Obama expressed that her outfits were often “language of fashion” meant to convey messages about inclusion and identity. Now, she feels she can dress in a more personal way. “I dress for myself now,” she said, emphasizing a sense of freedom she didn’t experience before. She doesn’t have to explain her choices anymore, which, in a way, marks a significant shift for her.

Her recent comments also touch on a broader topic, suggesting that the U.S. may not yet be prepared to elect a female president. “As we’ve seen in past elections, unfortunately we’re not ready yet,” she stated during her appearance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, implying societal readiness is still a concern.

In expressing this, she candidly said, “Don’t look at me about running. You’re all lying. You’re not ready.” It’s a thought-provoking perspective that encapsulates not only her experience but also broader societal challenges.
