Michelle Obama Comments on Daughter Maria’s Career Choice
Michelle Obama recently addressed her daughter Maria’s choice to drop the famous surname as she embarks on a career in the entertainment field. Maria, who wrote and directed a short film that debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, opted to use her middle name instead for her credits.
This topic came up during the June 2nd episode of the “Sibling Revelry” podcast, hosted by Oliver and Kate Hudson. Michelle reflected on how both her daughters, now young adults, experienced a desire to distance themselves from their family name during their teenage years. “They’re still doing that,” she remarked.
Michelle shared her support for Maria’s decision, emphasizing the importance of her daughters earning their own recognition. “It’s crucial for my kids to feel like what they achieve is based on their efforts. They don’t want people thinking things come easy for them,” she explained.
She added that both of her daughters are quite sensitive about this topic. “They want to be their own people,” Michelle stated.
Michelle reminisced about how you could tell Maria was determined to establish her own identity. “She took off her last name, and we were like, ‘They’ll still know it’s you, Maria.’ But we respected her choice to carve out her own path,” she said. Michelle noticed that her daughters had no desire to be seen as “little princesses in the White House.”
The former First Lady elaborated on her daughters’ quest for independence, explaining that they wanted to explore the world and push boundaries. “I knew that, as a mother, I would have to give them more freedom than perhaps I was comfortable with,” she remarked, reflecting on her approach to parenting.
