Michelle Obama remarks that society criticizes abortion while not supporting new mothers.

On a recent podcast, former first lady Michelle Obama shared her thoughts on motherhood and the conflicting messages society sends about it. She discussed this while her husband, President Obama, responded to listener inquiries alongside actress Halle Bailey.

One listener, Abigail, a high school music teacher and new mom, sought advice on juggling work and motherhood after taking a year off. President Obama remarked on the inadequacy of maternity leave policies, emphasizing that they often last only three to four months, which is not enough time for women’s bodies to recover. He noted that even after a natural birth, the body’s needs during this period, like breastfeeding, clash with societal expectations.

Michelle highlighted that society often fails to honor mothers’ biological needs. She pointed out that while there’s a strong societal push for childbirth—like messages advocating against abortion—there’s a lack of focus on how to create conditions that truly support women during and after pregnancy.

She criticized the system for not providing the necessary support mothers require, stating that it leads to difficulties in managing multiple responsibilities. Michelle mentioned her own tendency to give everything her all but suggested that mothers should allow themselves some grace. “Sometimes, a 40% effort is totally fine,” she emphasized. She reassured listeners that children are more resilient than we think, noting that they don’t stop loving their parents simply because they pursue other interests or work outside the home.

Through her reflections, Michelle Obama continues to resonate with many, highlighting the complexities of motherhood and the need for a more supportive framework within society.
