“Barak went from state senator to US senator. The next thing I know is, people said, 'This guy should run for president.' And you were like, 'Hmm, no, I wasn't doing that,'” Robinson explained, adding that Michelle wanted similar upbringing for the daughters she was with her father. “Barak has come to me. He seems like, 'I can't convince your sister to go with this.' And I, oh, what is he like?
Robinson told Barack he told Michelle he told him about it and if they put their mom, Marian Robinson, on the idea, Michelle might come. Their mother, Marian, passed away in May 2024 at the age of 86.
“But I think what pushed it to the top was persuading him not to punish him for being really good at what he's doing. It's like a guy fighting to go to the NBA. And it's not fair, and I spoke at the same time with you and mom, and both you sat there reasonably mad and said I was right,” Robinson added.
