Michelle Obama Discusses Daughter’s Career Choices
This week, former First Lady Michelle Obama shared insights into her daughter Maria’s approach in the film industry, emphasizing that Maria “makes her own path” despite the weight of their famous surname.
Reportedly, Maria chose to omit her middle name, Anne’s surname, for the credits of a short film she wrote and directed, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
In a podcast episode with actors Kate and Oliver Hudson, Michelle mentioned that both she and her husband support Maria’s decision to drop the last name for her film credits.
She reflected on how her daughters, Malia and Sasha, now young adults at 25 and 23, have matured. “They definitely went through a period where they were pushing away… trying to distinguish themselves,” Michelle noted. “It’s crucial for my kids to feel they’re earning their place in the world. They want to be recognized for their own efforts.”
Michelle emphasized that she and her husband respect Maria’s desire to forge her own identity in the film industry. The challenges of being in the public eye can be complex, but they’ve aimed to instill a strong work ethic in their children.
As her children grew older, Michelle observed that they began to appreciate their parents’ experiences more deeply. “I think they embrace our parenting principles now… They understand us as complete human beings,” she said, reflecting on her own realizations about her parents during her college years.
Recently, there have been reports regarding Malia Obama’s Nike commercial facing plagiarism allegations from fellow filmmaker Natalie Jasmine Harris.
As for Maria Obama, she has not publicly commented on the controversy surrounding the commercial.
