Michelle Obama has once again addressed ongoing speculation regarding her marriage to former President Barack Obama.
“People seem to think because you don’t see me out with my husband all the time, it means something’s wrong,” said the 61-year-old former First Lady during a recent appearance on NPR’s “Wild Card” podcast hosted by Rachel Martin.
“We’re in our sixties now, and you know, we have our own lives. We’re not sharing every moment,” she added.
She acknowledged that her decision to skip notable events, including President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration, has fueled more rumors about her relationship.
“This year, I decided not to attend funerals and inaugurations; I wanted to define my own priorities,” she explained. “I have to take ownership of that choice.”
Reflecting on her life, Obama mentioned that being less visible together has led to assumptions about their marriage. “Whatever misunderstandings there are, I need to own them. No regrets, though,” she stated.
On her own podcast, “IMO,” co-hosted with her brother Craig Robinson, she discussed balancing her ambitions as a working mother and former First Lady, suggesting it sometimes felt necessary to “scale back.”
Obama indicated that she is open about the realities of her marriage: “If there were issues, trust me, people would know. My brother would certainly be aware of it. I’m not out of touch with reality,” she shared with Stephen Bartlett on “The CEO’s Diary.”
Despite all the chatter around potential divorce, the couple has been seen together recently, enjoying dinner at a popular restaurant in Manhattan and sharing a meal in Washington, DC.
