Tragic Incident Involving Former Marine and LDS Church

Grand Blanc – Thomas Sanford, an archer associated with the Latter-day Saints Church in Michigan, has garnered attention for his extreme views about the Mormon faith. Friends have mentioned that he seems convinced of some grand goal, almost as if he believes they will “take over the world.”

This intense fixation might have roots in a tumultuous relationship he had with a devout Mormon woman while he was living in Utah, according to a former landlord. “He wasn’t entirely sure about joining the church, but he wanted to be with her,” said Sandra Winter, reflecting on Sanford’s state of mind at that time.

After serving as a US Marine, including a deployment in Iraq, Sanford found himself in Utah, where he experimented with methamphetamine. “Psychologically, he was struggling,” added Peter Tarnini, an acquaintance.

Upon returning to Michigan, Sanford’s perception of the Mormon faith seemed to shift dramatically. “He felt this bizarre charm from the Mormons but also called them antichrists,” noted Francis, Tarnini’s twin brother. This disdain was evident even during social gatherings, like Peter’s wedding, where he could only focus on his grievances about Mormons. “Honestly, I wish he’d talked about something else,” Tarnini recalled.

This cycle of negative remarks escalated until a week when he drove his truck to the Latter-day Saints Church in Grand Blanc. There, on September 28th, he set the building ablaze, leading to a devastating outcome: four fatalities and injuries to eight people.

Chris Johns, a candidate for the Michigan City Council, recounted his unsettling interactions with Sanford during neighborhood canvassing. “He would vent for almost 15 minutes about Mormons,” Johns recalled. “He really didn’t hold back his disdain.” He claimed it was something he just couldn’t shake off, emphasizing how he considered Mormon beliefs as fundamentally flawed compared to traditional Christianity.

Interestingly, amid these intense discussions, Sanford also expressed pride and affection for his 10-year-old son. During their chat, he even asked about Johns’ daughter, which added a layer of complexity to his character. “It’s like he showed glimpses of caring, yet the tragic consequences of his actions left a fatherless child behind,” Johns reflected.

Just days after their conversation, Sanford’s violence erupted into the tragedy that shocked the community, as he torched the church, reshaping lives forever.
