Haley Stevens Advocates Feminist Foreign Policy Resolution

Representative Haley Stevens from Michigan recently co-hosted a resolution advocating for a “feminist approach to all aspects of foreign policy” in the final session of Congress, while also positioning herself as a moderate Democrat in the Senate race.

This resolution, introduced by Representative Lois Frankel of Florida on March 8, 2023, was presented to the Foreign Affairs Committee. According to D-Calif’s Sydney Kamlager-Dove, “A fair world cannot exist without a womanist perspective.” The goal is to view global issues through a comprehensive lens that incorporates women’s perspectives, moving beyond traditional frameworks and working toward true equality.

Alongside Stevens, several Progressive House Democrats co-hosted the resolution, including Jasmine Crockett from Texas, Pramila Jayapal from Washington, Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, Ayana Presley from Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib from Michigan.

The resolution proposes a model that “takes a feminist approach to all aspects of foreign policy,” addressing areas such as diplomacy and humanitarian responses, trade, defense, immigration, and financing. It emphasizes the importance of promoting peace, gender equality, and environmental integrity as core components of foreign policy.

The document outlines an “intersectional approach,” aiming to address multiple systems of discrimination, such as those related to race, age, language, and gender. It also argues that feminist diplomacy is crucial for peaceful conflict resolution and integrating comprehensive immigration policies that consider the needs of diverse populations.

While Stevens is associated with the progressive wing of her party, she is also highlighting her candidacy as a competitive option for Michigan’s US Senate seat in the 2026 elections, especially as Gary Peters has announced he will not seek re-election.

As part of her campaign, Stevens noted she was able to attract votes from across the aisle in previous elections. This time, she seems to be leaning towards a more moderate stance, distinguishing herself from some of her primary rivals within the party.

In addition to her advocacy work, Stevens has proposed legislation aimed at cutting costs and boosting manufacturing in Michigan, showcasing her commitment to practical solutions.

The race for Peters’ seat is drawing in various Democratic candidates, including Michigan Senator Mallory McMorrow and others. On the Republican side, former Representative Mike Rogers and other candidates are contending for the position, while there’s also an independent candidate in the mix.
