A popular Michigan library was forced to close after multiple creatures were found spilling out of returned DVD cases after the library closed.
The Royal Oak Public Library announced on social media that it was temporarily closing for “health and safety reasons” after staff were sorting out a book drop on Saturday morning and discovered a cockroach crawling out of a DVD case.
“We discovered the bug after opening the DVD case and the bug jumped out,” the library posted on Instagram on Saturday.
“It seems like there are multiple types of bugs, but we're not sure.”
Library officials said in the same post that the DVDs were returned after closing on Friday, and that upon discovering the insects, they immediately closed the doors, locked the book drop and bagged all infested materials until pest control experts could resolve the problem.
“Protect our staff, protect our library materials and protect materials borrowed from other libraries,” Library Director Sandy Irwin said. Detroit Free Press.
“I'm a librarian and I'm not a pest control expert, but I look at 1,000 different kinds of bugs.”
Staff caught one bug on the tape but were unable to identify all of the bugs. she told People magazine..
Pest control contractors inspected the building, book drops and returns before allowing the library to open on Monday afternoon, the library posted on social media, assuring the public that the facility is inspected monthly for pests.
“Our library pest control technician has inspected all returned items, the book drop and the building,” the library posted Monday.
“We didn't find any insects. The photos we shared showed it to be a cockroach.”
