It seems that the five warnings didn’t make much of an impact.
A man from Michigan was sentenced to five years in prison for accumulating over 40,000 images and videos of child pornography, some of which he admitted to acquiring while stationed at the Guantanamo Naval Base.
David Mark Bartels, age 38, was sentenced on Friday and ordered to pay $63,000 in restitution.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in January, but the court documents didn’t elaborate on his specific role at the naval base.
According to federal prosecutors, Bartels owned a five-terabyte hard drive that contained around 41,026 images and videos depicting child sexual abuse related to 285 identified victims. All this material was concealed in a file labeled “\nsfw\nope\dont open\ warned\\ deeper”.
Authorities claimed that Bartels utilized a Tor browser to navigate the dark web, which helped him access this illegal content without revealing his identity.
This case was part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Childhood,” initiated in May 2006 to tackle child abuse and sexual exploitation.
Over the years, the federal government has prosecuted numerous offenders under this initiative.
In related news, a man in Missouri was sentenced to up to 30 years in prison in January for attempting to film a 15-year-old girl while she was bathing at home. Additionally, a former Pennsylvania trooper pleaded guilty in May 2023 after being found with a substantial amount of child pornography, including images involving a young minor.
