Teacher Arrested for Alleged Rape of Student
A physical education teacher and youth basketball coach from the Bronx was arrested on charges of raping a 14-year-old student last December, as reported by police and other sources.
Javon Johnson, 34, was taken into custody on December 21, with the NYC Police Department announcing the news just two days after the incident came to light.
The alleged victim was one of Johnson’s students, according to officials.
Johnson held the title of “physical education specialist” and was the middle school basketball coach at Icahn Charter School 2 located in the Van Nest area. According to his LinkedIn profile, he also served as the program director for the New York Junior Tennis & Learning afterschool program until March 2024.
In his professional profile, Johnson claimed that working with middle school students instilled in him a sense of “patience and attracting young people,” expressing a desire to help them gain university acceptance for their future aspirations. He described teaching as more than just a job, but a passion that drives him to create an inclusive environment for children.
I can’t help but feel a mix of disbelief and outrage over these allegations. It’s just surreal to think someone in a position meant to guide and inspire would betray trust in such a way.
Following his arrest, Icahn Charter School 2 refrained from making any comments, simply stating that Johnson is “no longer employed by the school.”
Johnson faces significant charges, as New York law stipulates that cases involving minors can lead to sentences ranging from 25 years to life in prison.
Authorities have encouraged other potential victims to reach out. The NYPD’s Sexual Assault Hotline can be reached at 1-212-267-RAPE (7273), and they also have resources for anonymous tips through the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
It’s tough to digest this situation, and one can’t help but wonder about the impact on the community, the students involved, and how these types of cases shake our faith in trusted figures.
