Middle School Expels Student After AI Photo Incident

A middle school in Louisiana has made the controversial decision to expel a 13-year-old girl following an incident where male classmates allegedly created and circulated an AI-generated nude image of her on campus.

This eighth-grader from Ward 6 Middle School faced charges after assaulting a male student on the bus home. Reports say that this boy continued to harass her, even sharing images that combined his face with a naked body, despite her complaints to school officials. Her lawyers emphasize that this harassment was persistent.

The Lafourche Parish School District expelled the boy for assault in late August, just after the school year began. Meanwhile, the girl’s family is now considering legal action against the school board, asserting that they failed to protect her and instead punished her.

At a meeting on November 5, the girl’s lawyers urged the school board to reverse the expulsion, arguing that the girl had been bullied throughout the day. They pointed out that the AI-generated image prominently featured her in a compromising way.

Her legal team claims that she was denied “due process” and expressed concern about the precedent being set by not holding the boys accountable.

On September 15, one of the boys involved was charged with ten counts related to the unlawful distribution of AI-generated images. However, this information was not made public until November 10, according to reports.

During the bus ride, the girl reacted strongly when she discovered the photo being shared among a group of boys. Her lawyer mentioned that she “smacked” the boy in question and “knocked the phone out of his hand.”

It remains unclear whether this boy is the same one later charged.

The school board upheld her expulsion after intense discussions on November 5. Although acknowledging the girl as a victim, board member Valerie Bourgeois suggested that her actions—hitting the boy—led to the expulsion, implying there might have been alternative ways to address the situation.

The board and Superintendent Jarrod Martin ultimately decided against reversing the expulsion, though they modified it to allow her return under probationary conditions.

Martin explained that in life, it’s possible to be both a victim and a perpetrator, and sometimes anger can lead to regrettable actions. He remarked that the incident was difficult to defend.

Craig Webre, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff, stated that the girl would not face criminal charges given the overall circumstances.

During the school board meeting, the victim, sitting with her parents, heard her case presented in painful detail. Her father testified that her academic performance suffered dramatically after the expulsion, leading her into depression.

He reflected on the situation, suggesting that expulsion was too severe, noting that suspension may have been a more appropriate consequence. He expressed that while his daughter was wrong, the school also contributed to the problem by failing to manage the environment where the incident occurred.

The family intends to sue the school district, claiming it created a hostile environment and did not adhere to Title IX requirements or proper reporting obligations.

In a media statement, Martin noted that any allegations of criminal activity on campus are promptly reported to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. He asserted that the school followed all necessary protocols in this incident.

The investigation is still ongoing, with the sheriff’s office indicating that additional arrests may follow.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Lafourche Parish School District have been initiated.
